COMPANY INVEMENT / LIFE SCIENCES OVERVIEW

This team is an affiliate of the firm and was established to utilize an investment strategy derived from the Firm’s proven, deep diligence, value-added approach to build great companies that deliver both competitive financial returns and measurable social and environmental impact.  The team targets three distinct impact themes:

    • Health & Wellness: Improve health outcomes by providing access to high quality, affordable healthcare for underserved patient communities, promoting higher quality and more sustainable food systems, and developing products and services that promote healthy lifestyles;

    • Education & Workforce Development: Reduce skills and achievement gaps and improve economic mobility by providing training and education, promoting ownership, and catalyzing economic growth in distressed communities;

    • Sustainability: Reduce environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions through ecologically beneficial water, energy, agricultural and other sustainable products, services and business operations.

Life Sciences is an affiliate of the Firm and was established to invest in life science companies. The Firm believes that healthcare, and life sciences in particular, are attractive markets for investing with ample opportunity to deploy capital efficiently and deliver attractive returns to investors. In addition, the Life Sciences team has proven to be a valuable resource to its Firm’s affiliate advisers to enhance healthcare vertical expertise, expand networks and collaborate on investments.  Life Sciences targets four archetype investment opportunities:

    • Inflection Capital: Opportunities to provide capital to a company to fund a key discrete derisking event that will drive a value inflection for a company. An example of this would be the funding of a clinical trial that will demonstrate efficacy and proof of concept of a therapeutic. This type of investment is typically an equity round following an early venture capital investment.

    • Growth Capital: Opportunities to provide capital to a company to accelerate and expand business growth. This will typically be a near revenue or revenue generating company in need of capital to fund development of additional products, expand its geographical reach, expand its label and indications or enhance its commercialization efforts. In addition, investments also can support the development of a platform company with a less risky development profile. This type of investment can take the form of equity, structured equity or hybrid debt.

    • Fallen Angels: Opportunities to invest capital in a company, typically public, with an impaired asset (e.g., following a clinical, regulatory or commercial misstep) that is in need of capital to course correct to realize fundamental asset value. This type of investment would typically be equity, structured equity or hybrid debt.

    • Larger Private Equity: A mature, cash generative business where the Life Sciences team would leverage its capabilities to collaborate with the Firm’s affiliates to invest in a mature company in a manner consistent with later stage private equity investments.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Primarily responsible for the review, management of and participation in the following activities for Company Investment and Life Sciences Partnerships:

  • Manage relationship with third party administrator for the following:

    • Quarterly US GAAP Basis Reporting; annual US GAAP Basis audit

    • Annual Tax Basis Book Preparation; working with internal tax department and external advisers regarding tax implication of complex investment transactions

    • Cash flow management, capital calls and cash and stock distributions

    • Work with deal staff to assist in the preparation of quarterly portfolio company valuations & prepare summarized data for partner presentations

    • Performance, hurdle and waterfall analysis

    • Responding to requests and inquiries of limited partners and their representatives via telephone and email

    • Working with Investor Relations in preparation of presentation materials, information posted to investor website, fundraising documents

    • Understanding and documenting investment transactions; working with deal staff and outside advisors on deal closings and harvest transactions

    • Analysis of various fund activities to ensure compliance with partnership agreements

    • Other ad hoc responsibilities

    • Working with the Finance team and CFO on projects to enhance the product of the team, department and firm.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

    • 3-5 years accounting experience

    • Certified Public Accountant or MBA (preferred but not required)

    • Excellent project management and organizational skills; ability to effectively prioritize multiple projects with the highest attention to detail

    • Creative problem solving ability and sound judgment – ability to use own initiative and take responsibility for decisions

    • Strong interpersonal skills with capacity to interact with all levels

    • Team player

DESIRED EDUCATION

    • Bachelors Degree in Finance or Accounting from a four-year college/university with a strong academic background
